Sad Mood – Snap out of it

Sad mood?

The weekend is always a good time to look back on your achievements during the last week. Yesterday I had an emotionally pretty shitty day with a sad mood. 🤬 I think that happens to everyone once in a while. So my question was: How to snap out of it?

I realized that I needed to snap out of it. To get rid of my sad mood, I analyzed the best decisions in my life. Actually, most of them were pretty hard to make. And I came up with a list of 13 decisions, I made in the past. First of all, I added all of them to my success journal. Doing so gave me back a lot of my energy. Because it made me aware, that oneself puts down the seeds for one’s successes!

To snap out of it

I want to encourage you, to think about the best decisions in your life. And to write them down. If you are smarter than me, and I guess that you are,  you will do it, before you get into a sad mood. Because it doesn’t need a bad day to do so, it actually should be much easier to do it on a good day. 😆 But if you are already in a sad mood, this exercise will help you to snap out of it!

I came up with a list of my best decisions:

Change your sad mood into energy

Bring the list in of your best decisions a sequence. That should be pretty easy. My list looks like that now:

  • 2008 getting divorced
  • 2009 founding Rooms4Music
  • 2011 reading 📖 “Der Weg zum erfolgreichen Unternehmer”
  • 2012 focusing on health, making it my #1 value
  • 2013 visiting Tony Robbins seminars
  • 2014 visiting Bodo Schäfer Seminars
  • 2015
    • monogamy is a fallacy
    • selling my house in Ludwigsburg, Germany
  • 2016
    • putting money on the stock market
    • participating in the workation in Bali
    • spending the majority of my time in Bali
  • 2017
    • leaving Germany and moving to Hanoi
    • putting Rooms4Music in Chris’s hands
  • 2018 bringing Rooms4Music back onto the success path and cutting costs

Now it becomes a bit more difficult, but it is an effective

Treatment of a sad mood, and how to snap out of it:

Analyze if you can see a pattern, which carried from one decision to the next, from one level of your development to the next higher level. I found it helps if you add the outcome of your decisions to the list.

  • 2008 getting divorced = Found the love of my life and shared the best years of my life with her.
  • 2009 founding Rooms4Music = becoming independent from my job in 2012 and living entrepreneurial freedom
  • 2011 reading 📖 “Der Weg zum erfolgreichen Unternehmer” = turning my self-employment into a self-running enterprise
  • 2012 focusing on health as my #1 value = discovered running as my new passion, started yoga and improved my movability and flexibility especially in my mind

The biggest change in my mindset and to snap out of it was

  • 2013 visiting Tony Robbins seminars = understood the psychology of people better, especially my own, I realized that freedom (of mind, traveling, sexual, financial) is my highest value
  • 2015
    • visiting Bodo Schäfer Seminars = developed my plan for financial freedom, an investment strategy, and  asset allocation
    • selling my house in Ludwigsburg, Germany = became financially independent
    • monogamy is a fallacy = freedom of mind, sexual freedom, much more relaxed and natural relationships with women, sharing and enjoying more tantric energy than I ever dreamed of
  • 2016
    • putting money on the stock market =
      • I started trading and becoming an investor,
      • started to enjoy the volatility of the market.
      • Finally, I learned to stay calm, if the market is going against my expectation and
      • becoming financially independent.
    • participating in the workation in Bali = falling in love with Bali and the idea of working location independent
    • spending the majority of my time in Bali = living my dream and making 2017 the best year of my life
  • 2017
  • 2018 bringing Rooms4Music back onto the success path and cutting costs. =
    • Making 2018 to the most successful year in terms of
      • turnover,
      • profit and as a result of that
      • the value of the enterprise.

Prevention of sad mood

Now comes the real challenge:

After you did this analysis, extrapolate to the next decision. That will carry you to the next level of your development. Chose one or two new ones, which is the most charming for you, and make a decision. This will help you to prevent you from getting into a sad mood. I am not promising you, that you will never ever get back into a sad mood again. But as long as you got clarity of your direction due to your decision, it is pretty unlikely to fall back into it. If it still appears, it just means, you are not focussing on it anymore, or it is time to go through the procedure once again.

That will give you some understanding of how it psychologically works and encourage you to take the next step. But you don’t need to understand it, to use the procedure. Likewise, you don’t need to understand how a gearbox works, to be able to drive a car.

Remember, not achievement, but Steady growth along the way is the source of everlasting happiness!

How to Make or Take a Decision?

‘We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them’

From time to time people experience hard times to make or take a decision. Why? Whenever you got a hard time to make or take a decision, it is for some reason. Psychologists usually say: It is due to some kind of depression as the underlying cause. Then they want to treat the depression, which can take years. I am rather looking for a solution. Due to the fact, that all unanswered questions are called problems, my approach is: Follow your values to make or take a decision.

Problems can only be solved
on a higher level than they appear

Imagine you see the urge to save somebody’s life. Because someone fell into the pool and can’t swim. You don’t need to think twice about it to make or take a decision. If you are a good swimmer, you will jump into the water as well. If not you might hold out for something that swims, e. g. a rescue ring or an inflatable rubber duck. Sitting down, being depressed about it, and having a cigarette, while you are thinking what to do, is no option. Your basic need for contribution is so strong, that it hardly feels like a decision at all.

How to make or take a decision

Some people keep sitting for more than 10 minutes in a restaurant reading the menu. Not because it is such an exciting book. They are just not clear about what they should eat. Not being clear about, shall I save some money and choose the cheapest. Or shall I spoil myself with the most delicious food on the menu? Not even being clear if you prefer healthy food or junk food makes it almost impossible to decide. Also, no clarity about the value of money or health leads to this situation.

Time to treat the underlying depression.
Come on, this is complete bullshit!

Clarify what your basic needs, your values, your dreams are. And what your mission, and vision are.

Identify them participating in a business retreat.

Conscious Female Entrepreneurs

Someone who is on a special diet, and got due to this a limited variety of food to choose from, has a much easier time to decide. There are some constraints guiding him through the menu. Just choosing what fits the best, and then maybe asking the waiter: “Is it free of gluten or lactose?” Done! It shows that he knows his values and that health is valued higher than (saving) money.

Do you have clarity about your targets, mission, vision, and dreams? If I am having trouble to decide, I know that I am having no clarity about some of my values. Let’s have a look into some examples:

Example 1: Make or take a decision

Should I still add musicians to my Facebook contacts, or only female entrepreneurs? This means I am not focussed on one of my business Rooms4Music or Vitality4Happiness. Due to that, I understand, that serving both are pulling me in different directions. This requires a strategic question. Which can be solved on a higher level.

Time to think about my mission and take a decision! It is an easy decision after thinking about this for a short time. My mission is: I am vitality for happiness. Some of my highest values are health, love, happiness – which is caused by growth – and contribution. Plus I love women and entrepreneurship! My customers from Rooms4Music are musicians, mostly male, no entrepreneurs. Most of them play their music for pleasure and don’t really want to grow with it. And finally, health is often completely outside of their focus. They are more after sex, and drugs, and Rock’n’Roll.

Example 2: Make or take a decision

Shall I organize business retreats or just invest in some business and then mentor the entrepreneurs I am invested in?
It makes me aware, that I am not clear on the strategy, how to grow the business.

I need to clarify the next higher level, my mission. My mission doesn’t help at this point. So let’s go one level further up. My vision is to see the hunger in the world disappear. And I want to contribute to it. The quicker I invest the more I can contribute. The business retreats might delay this process. So I should rather invest first, and then do the business retreats for those who I am already invested in. Helping them to run their business more efficiently, so that we jointly can contribute more. Thinking it that way, it becomes rather clear how I have to tune the strategy.

Example 3: Make or take a decision

Do I want to stay in Bali or keep on traveling around the world? Here I can see, something is conflicting within my basic needs. So this can (only) be solved, by looking into my values.

I learned something new about my values in a mastermind group, in which all of the participants guessed the primary value of the other members. Most of the guesses where pretty accurate. And the guesses where in accordance with what the other participants thought about themselves. With the exception of me! Everybody said, that my first value is freedom. Freedom didn’t even appear on my own list! So I realized, that I am already living this value, that I don’t see it anymore as my value. And yes, I got aware that it is my most essential value. So please don’t ask me for an everlasting monogamous relationship! Being aware of that, it becomes easy to say bye-bye to Bali. At least from time to time for a trip around the world. And then return to the island of the gods.

The hierarchical order of these levels

  • Vision or dream (highest level): Holistic contribution to make this world or universe a better place
  • Mission or targets: Love and contribution to those around you
  • Strategy or plan: Individual needs, power, success, adventure
  • Basic needs and values (lowest level): Security, survival, and basic connections

I Think About You And Me

I keep reminding you of thinking time, and you probably think: “I read that already a few times. Why are you bothering me with the same issue again and again?” –  “Well, I Think About You And Me.”

And there is more to think about than you might expect:

  1. Did you do your thinking time today, yesterday and the day before?
  2. Could you come up with some new questions?
  3. Did you do your thinking time perfectly?

I Think About You And Me, so let’s look at it in detail:

1. Did you do your thinking time today, yesterday and the day before?

I Think About You And MeSee, it is good that I keep reminding you. You didn’t build a habit yet, which is usually the case after 3-4 weeks of daily repetition. Probably you are not there, yet. But it is not a long way that requires discipline (= self-love) to get there. My reminders shall help you through this first month. Then the habit will make you do it automatically by yourself on 6 out of 7 days. On the 7th day, you still need a kick in your ass, as a reminder. Or you just take the deserved break from it. How about reading your answers on the seventh day, and ticking those answers, which you already implemented in your life? And celebrate your success!

2. I Think About You And Me: Did you come up with some new questions?

Who asks better questions get better answers! So when I Think About You And Me, I want to encourage you to spend some thinking time on better or modified questions.

For example, you might modify the question:

  • What would I do today if I died tomorrow?

like this:

  • What would I do this week, if I died next week?
  • Or what would I do this month, if I died next month?
  • You might even go for the long run: What would I do this year, if I died next year?

Just reading this, you can already feel the power of the different perspective! So go and change your questions to whatever serves you best.

3. I Think About You And Me: Did you do your thinking time perfectly?

Thinking time is not about a perfect process, even if I keep describing the process mostly. It is about effectiveness. Effectiveness is measured by results.

So the question when I Think About You And Me is:

  • Which of the ideas, actions, efforts, habits, … I was thinking about, are showing the biggest progress towards my dreams and targets?

Most people tend to do things perfectly. I know what I am talking about, I am German! Perfectionism is a stereotype of Germans (Japanese and Singaporeans, as well ;-). This is a wonderful thing in developing great products, but it is a burden in terms of effectiveness!

Once again: Thinking time is about producing results, with the actions you take based on it:

“Effectiveness” is NOT Efficiency

Doing your thinking time-efficient would mean, you get it done in the shortest time thinkable: zero time. Nothing would be worse than that!

If I Think About You And Me, we should rather think about effectiveness:

Which of my ideas, actions, efforts, habits, … are showing NO results towards my dreams and targets? And as a consequence: Get rid of those tasks. Thinking about this for one hour, to finding only one thing, which keeps you busy for 30 minutes a day, and which creates no progress. This would be wonderful. Even if you lose half an hour on the first day, it will save you 3.5 hours a week. If you subtract the invested hour of thinking time, you still gained 2.5 hours. This is a return on investment of 250%  already within the first week. Oh, women, I would love to have a savings account like that! Did you get no ideas, how to save 30 minutes a day?

I Think About You, so let me inspire you:

  • Sleeping time
  • Transferring tasks to kids, partner, friends, assistants, cooking, GO-JEK services like a car wash, cleaning, shopping, …
  • Listen to learning programs (audiobooks) during driving
  • Modeling ideas instead of reinventing everything yourself
  • Stop watching television, some people may save 1 to 4 hours a day!
  • Avoid traveling by car during peak traffic, by scheduling your dates and working time around it.

BTW – When I Think About You: Personal development is, to have better communication with yourself. And your thinking-time is pure conscious communication with yourself! If you do not have anything to think about, just answer those questions as today’s thinking time:
