Do you know that you have two numbers for your age? The first one is your chronological age. The second is your metabolic, or biological age.
The chronological age is the actual amount of time that you have been alive. But there is also a second measurement, your metabolic age or biological age. Which measures the age that your body seems to be.
Most of us have all had the experience of being surprised. In case, if we find out that someone is far younger than we had imagined. For instance, when we thought, someone was in their late 50s. But it turned out, that this person actually is in the mid-40s. And, by the same token, we will occasionally discover that someone is considerably older than we had guessed. The reason for these discrepancies is often because their biological ages are different than their chronological ages.
Some people appear to be younger or older on the outside than their chronological age is. This reflects what is going on inside their bodies. The inner workings of one’s cells and organs can also appear to be older or younger as well.
And scientists have been looking for a simple yardstick to measure the metabolic age. Nowadays, most body fat scales can calculate it, by sending an electric current through your body.
Further, there is a so-called biological age. And it appears, as they also have finally found a measure for that. In our chromosomes. They serve the genetic material as a blueprint for all of the biological processes, that take place within our cells.
At the ends of each of our chromosomes are tiny beads. They prevent the double strands of DNA in the chromosomes from unraveling. These beads, also known as telomeres. And they can be compared to the plastic tips that keep the ends of our shoelaces from fraying. Every time that a cell divides, a telomere bead falls off from the end of the chromosome. It appears there is a direct correlation between telomere length and biological age. So by measuring telomere length, we now have a simple way of measuring biological age.
The longer you live, in other words, the greater your chronological age, the shorter the total length of your telomeres. But, you also affect your total telomere length by the lifestyle choices you make every day.
Healthful lifestyle choices increase telomere length while unhealthful choices decrease it.
